Improving the Conservation Value of Working Lands
As lead for the Conservation Science of Military Landscapes program at Archbold Biological Station, I oversee Archbold's efforts on research at the DeLuca Preserve, a working cattle ranch managed by the University of Florida and under a conservation easement of Ducks Unlimited. Our primary efforts at DeLuca are to monitor and manage for endangered Florida Grasshopper Sparrows and other grassland birds of conservation concern (e.g., Eastern Meadowlark, Northern Bobwhite, Bachman's Sparrow) in an effort to find synergies between management that benefits the sparrows while also enabling productive cattle farming. Additionally, Archbold is currently part of a larger study at DeLuca aimed at improving the conservation value of working lands on the Avon Park Air Force Range Sentinel Landscape.
