Conservation of Imperiled Species on Military Landscapes

As lead for the Conservation Science of Military Landscapes program at Archbold Biological Station, I oversee Archbold's efforts on the "big three" threatened, endangered, and at-risk bird species (Florida Grasshopper Sparrow, Florida Scrub-Jay, and Red-cockaded Woodpecker) on the Avon Park Air Force Range (APAFR). Since the early 1990s Archbold has partnered with the U. S. Air Force, and more recently with the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service on a cooperative agreement, to monitor and conduct research on the three species at APAFR. Additionally, Archbold collaborates with researchers from the University of Central Florida and other institutions on a SERDP grant aimed at understanding the impacts of interactive stressors (fire, fire ants, and grazing) on wildlife populations on DoD lands, which includes APAFR.
